How To Achieve Clear Skin The Right Way

From Acne-Prone Teen To Clear Skin At 23

It started when I was 15 years old. One after another, I started getting acne on my face. It affected my confidence a lot. Ever since then, I hated looking at myself in the mirror and avoid having my pictures taken as much as I can. One day, while looking out into the sea and enjoying the sun set, I made a determination to go on a journey to fix my skin once and for all!

Achieving clear, healthy skin isn’t about quick fixes or harsh treatments—it’s about consistency, care, and understanding what your skin truly needs. If you’ve been struggling with breakouts, dullness, or sensitivity, don’t worry—you’re not alone. With the right approach, glowing skin is possible! Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you achieve a clearer complexion the right way.

1. Stick To a Gentle Routine

One of the most common mistakes people make is overloading their skin with products. A simple, consistent routine is far more effective. Focus on the basics:

  • Cleanser: A gentle, pH-balanced cleanser to remove dirt and oil.
  • Moisturizer: Hydrate your skin daily, even if it’s oily. I used to hate using moisturiser because of the sticky and sometimes oiliness I feel afterwards. However, I have changed my mind ever since I discovered these moisturizers
  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from UV damage every day.

2. Understand Your Skin Type

Not all products work for everyone. Oily, dry, sensitive, and combination skin each require different care. For example, lightweight gel moisturizers may suit oily skin, while richer creams are best for dry skin. Understanding your skin type helps you choose the right products without causing irritation. If you are not sure, it might be good to consult a dermatologist for a more accurate diagnosis of your skin type as some people might be experience oiliness on their T-zone and dryness for the rest.

3. Don’t Skip Sun Protection

UV rays can damage the skin barrier, cause premature aging, and worsen acne scars. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is your best defense. The choice of SPF is depending on the intensity of the UV rays. As someone who is living in Australia where we experience some of the highest UV rays in the world, SPF 30+ might not be enough. Make it a non-negotiable step in your morning routine.

4. Manage Stress and Sleep Well

Stress can trigger breakouts, while poor sleep dulls your complexion. Incorporate relaxation techniques like journaling, meditation, or even a daily walk. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep to give your skin the chance to repair and regenerate.

5. Stay Hydrated & Eat Smart

What you put inside your body reflects on your skin. Drink enough water, and eat nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, berries, nuts, and omega-3-rich fish. Limit excessive sugar and processed foods, which can trigger inflammation.

Back then, when nothing seems to work, I decided to go on a 6 month vegan diet. After the 6 month period, my skin was the clearest it has ever been. I would love to continue being vegan but unfortunately it makes me very low on energy most of the time. Ever since then, I have embraced a new identity ‘someone who eats vegetables and fruits everyday’.

6. Don’t Pick or Pop Pimples

I wish I knew this sooner. I used to pop my pimples a lot back then. Although my skin is clear now, I have lots of indented scars on my cheeks.
As tempting as it may be, picking at your skin can spread bacteria, cause scarring, and delay healing. There are various spot treatments containing ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or tea tree oil available. Personally, they do not really work for me. Pimple patches was my best friend back when I was dealing with lots of acne. Those patches really helped to prevent me from touching my pimples too much, which lead to further scarring.

7. Be Patient & Consistent

Clear skin doesn’t happen overnight. It can take weeks (sometimes months) of consistency before you notice visible results. Stick to a simple routine, drink plenty of water, eat fruits and vegetables and your skin will thank you later.

8. Seek professional help

Remember, everyone’s skin journey is unique. What works for one person may not work for another, and that’s okay. If your skin concerns persist, consult a dermatologist for personalized advice.

When I went on a vegan diet for almost a year, my skin cleared up so much and I felt like it was the clearest it has ever been. Unfortunately, unlike others, my skin scars very easily and often times, it leaves me with keloid scars which cannot go away without proper medical attention. I decided to get professional help from my dermatologist. While she does not think I need any medication for my acne, but because my skin forms keloid easily, she decided to put me on Accutane on a very low dose to prevent any new keloid scars from appearing.
